Crowning Feast of Paschaltide

The Feast of Pentecost crowns the Paschal cycle. In Greek, “Pentecost” means fifty, and thus, it names the Feast that comes 50 days or 7 weeks after Easter Sunday. The two great feasts which bookend Paschaltide, Easter and Pentecost, correspond to two Jewish feast days found in the Old Testament, namely Passover and Pentecost.

Pope St. Leo the Great, in a sermon on Pentecost, compared the New Testament feasts with their Old Testament equivalents: “As once to the Hebrew people, freed from Egypt, the law was given on Mt. Sinai on the fiftieth day after the sacrifice of the lamb, so after the Passion of the Christ when the true Lamb of God was killed, on the fiftieth day from His Resurrection, the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles and the community of believers.”

In the Old Testament, Pentecost was the day on which God gave Israel the Torah (the Law) and they became a nation committed to serving Him. In the New Testament, Pentecost is the day on which the Holy Spirit descends on the Apostles as Christ promised to “teach you all things.” Dom Gueranger comments that “the Pasch, with all its triumphant joys, belongs to the Son of God, the Conqueror of death: Pentecost belongs to the Holy Spirit, for it is the day whereon He began His mission into this world, which, henceforward, was to be under His Law.”

The Courage of a Mother

No mother wants to see her child suffer. No mother has ever had to see her child suffer as she has. Like all mothers, her first instinct is to protect, to shield, to keep away the suffering. Torn by love. Torn by the sight of her Son. No one could invent a greater agony for her than this. She feels nothing. She feels everything. Surely her heart cannot take it any longer.

And yet, deep down in her soul, grace, a love unknown to man, stirs. A faith greater than Abraham’s rises. A hope able to conquer death breaths.

Meeting on the way to Calvary, she looks at her Son, weeps, and then urges Him on with an agonizing glance as if to say, “Yes. No matter how much it costs me, I want you to do this.” She is not a helpless bystander. She is in control. And she does not hold Him back.

At this moment, on the road to Calvary, as she sees up close the wounds, the crown, the burden of the Cross, Mary makes her choice. She does it. She has nothing left to give.

An Unassuming Presence

Years and years of waiting prepared God’s People for something spectacular. The Promised Messiah would be someone big. He would be a prophet. A priest. A king. You would know when He had arrived. But in classic Divine irony, the Messiah arrives in a rather obscure and unassuming manner. No pomp. No fanfare. God becomes present in a humble chamber surrounded by the humblest of characters. A carpenter, His young mother, some shepherds, and livestock.

How many persons missed Christ because they were looking for someone big and important? How many persons walked by Joseph, Mary, and Jesus and never once dreamed who this little baby was? If we don’t look out, we might miss Christ’s presence around us.

The drive to work, planning meals for the next week, changing the windshield wipers, getting up early to pray – these little moments of fidelity are where Christ is present and acting in our lives. It’s an unassuming presence. One that eschews the spectacular and elevates the mundane. A duty performed for the 543rd time excites no fervor nor does it receive any recognition. Most likely, that’s the moment that you experience God’s presence and grace working in your life. Christ comes gently, quietly. In your humblest duties, you can find the Christ who appeared not as a priest, prophet, or king, but as a little humble baby.
